Leki Dorji was born on January 1, 1972. Born and raised in Bhutan, Leki began studying photography at an early age while he was with his uncle, who owned a photography shop.
His early post-collegiate years were spent on the camera crews, learning from experienced, elder cinematographers and personal mentors including Palden Dorji.
Following this apprenticeship, Leki became a professional cinematographer of features films, music videos, and as the Director of Photography of the Arrows of Thunder Dragon Film Unit.
He is a diploma graduate of Edith Cowan University where he studied video production and also had undergone many other courses related to cinematography and photography in South Asian Countries like Thailand, Phillipinnes, Hong Kong and India.
Leki Dorji was in the film industry for the last 20 years. Leki hit his stride in 2003 with such elaborately lensed pictures as Six Boys and Lhadha gaw (2004)
Leki was the recipient of the “2011 National Film Festival Award” for ‘Best Cinematography’ for the film Sonam Kuenga Namgyel, in which he was the director of photography. Further he has won ‘Presidential Award’ (2004) in photo contest organized by RENEW (Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empowerment of Women), Bhutan On Theme “A Tribute to Bhutanese Women,” Bhutan. And had also won “Prize of Excellence Award” in photo competition “ The 20th Photo contest in Asia and the Pacific” on theme “Living Art and Culture” organized by Japan.
Leki Dorji was the director of photography on more than 13 films, including many other notable productions. He was also the first Bhutanese cinematographer to film a film in CinemaScope. Some of his great movies I am Sonam Kuenga Namgyal (2011) shot in Red One for local and The Arrows of Thunder Dragon (2010) Terma (The Prophecy) (2011)The film won, ‘Platinum Award at Asia Pacific International Filmmaker Festival And Awards, 2016 and best narrative feature at SR socially relevant film film festival New York 2017. Khushuthara 2015(The pattern of love) recieved Best Foreign Narrative Film at the Laughlin International Film Festival-2016
Contributed in developing the nascent feature/commercial movies in Bhutan. Worked as a cameraman for 14 commercial/international movies inclusive of editing, lighting and sound. The upcoming Bhutanese movies help to preserve our culture and tradition. The title of the movies are as follows:
